How Suffolk County Traffic Tickets Work

Suffolk County handles traffic tickets differently depending on where your ticket was issued. Understanding which court your case goes to is the first step.

Western Suffolk County — SCTPVA (Hauppauge)

If your traffic ticket was issued in one of the five western towns of Suffolk County, your case is handled by the Suffolk County Traffic and Parking Violations Agency (SCTPVA), located at 100 Veterans Memorial Highway, Hauppauge, NY 11788. The five western towns are:

  • Town of Babylon — Babylon Village, Lindenhurst, West Babylon, North Babylon, Copiague, Amityville, West Islip, Deer Park (southern portion)
  • Town of Brookhaven — Patchogue, Port Jefferson, Coram, Medford, Centereach, Selden, Lake Grove, Holtsville, Mastic, Shirley, Bellport, Blue Point, and many more
  • Town of Huntington — Huntington Village, Huntington Station, Cold Spring Harbor, Commack, Dix Hills, East Northport, Greenlawn, Northport, Melville
  • Town of Islip — Bay Shore, Brentwood, Central Islip, East Islip, Islip, Islip Terrace, Oakdale, Sayville, Bohemia, Ronkonkoma, Holbrook, Lake Ronkonkoma
  • Town of Smithtown — Smithtown, St. James, Kings Park, Nesconset, Lake Grove, Hauppauge

The SCTPVA operates differently from a traditional courtroom. It is an administrative agency that adjudicates traffic infractions and parking violations. You do not appear before a judge — cases are heard by hearing officers. Attorney Cook regularly appears at the SCTPVA and knows the procedures, the hearing officers, and how to negotiate effectively on your behalf.

Eastern Suffolk County — Town Justice Courts

If your traffic ticket was issued in one of the eastern towns of Suffolk County, your case is handled by the local town justice court where the ticket was issued:

  • Town of Riverhead Justice Court, 200 Howell Avenue, Riverhead, NY 11901
  • Town of Southampton Justice Court, 116 Hampton Road, Southampton, NY 11968
  • Town of East Hampton Justice Court, 159 Pantigo Road, East Hampton, NY 11937
  • Town of Southold Justice Court, 53095 Route 25, Town Hall Annex, Southold, NY 11971
  • Town of Shelter Island Justice Court, 38 North Ferry Road, Shelter Island, NY 11964

Attorney Cook handles tickets in all five eastern town courts as well as the SCTPVA. Regardless of where in Suffolk County your ticket was issued, we can represent you.

Suffolk County District Court

More serious traffic offenses — including misdemeanor charges such as aggravated unlicensed operation (AUO), reckless driving, and DWI/DWAI — may be handled by the Suffolk County District Court located at 400 Carleton Avenue, Central Islip, NY 11722. Attorney Cook handles matters at the District Court level as well.

What We Handle

Speeding tickets, cell phone tickets, red light camera citations, stop sign violations, failure to signal, following too closely, unsafe lane changes, disobeying a traffic control device, suspended license matters, uninspected vehicle citations, no-insurance violations, and all other Vehicle and Traffic Law (VTL) moving violations issued anywhere in Suffolk County.

How It Works

Send us a photo of your ticket by text or email. We will review it, quote you a flat fee, and get to work immediately. For SCTPVA cases, we handle the hearing on your behalf — you do not need to appear. For eastern town court cases, we represent you in court so you do not need to take time off work or travel to the East End. Our goal is to negotiate a reduction in points and fines. What to Do If You Received a Traffic Ticket in Suffolk County

Contact our experienced traffic ticket lawyers for a free intake consultation. Do not simply pay the ticket — paying is the same as pleading guilty and will result in points on your license, higher insurance premiums, and a mandatory New York State Driver Responsibility Assessment fee of up to $300 or more if you accumulate six or more points within 18 months. In many cases, hiring a lawyer can help you avoid these consequences entirely.

Consequences of Suffolk County Traffic Violations

Traffic violations in Suffolk County carry the same point values and penalties as anywhere in New York State, but the volume of enforcement on Long Island highways means Suffolk County drivers are particularly at risk. Accumulating 11 or more points within 18 months results in license suspension. Even a single speeding ticket of 21-30 mph over the limit carries 6 points — enough to trigger the Driver Responsibility Assessment on its own. Insurance rate increases from a single conviction can cost thousands of dollars over three years, far exceeding the cost of legal representation.

New York Traffic Ticket Points & Fines

Every moving violation conviction in New York adds points to your driving record. Accumulate 6 points within 18 months and the DMV imposes a Driver Assessment fee on top of any court fines. Reach 11 points and your license is automatically suspended.

Speeding Tickets

MPH Over Limit Points Fine Range (1st Offense) Fine Range (2nd in 18 Mo.)
1 – 10 3 $90 – $150 $180 – $300
11 – 20 4 $90 – $300 $180 – $450
21 – 30 6 $90 – $300 $180 – $450
31 – 40 8 $90 – $300 $180 – $450
41+ 11 $90 – $300 $180 – $450

All speeding fines are subject to a mandatory NYS surcharge of $88 – $93. School zone speeding carries higher fines: $180 – $600 for a first offense and $360 – $750 for a second offense within 18 months.

Other Common Violations

Violation Points
Cell phone / texting while driving 5
Reckless driving 5
Following too closely (tailgating) 4
Inadequate brakes 4
Disobeying a traffic signal (red light) 3
Stop sign violation 3
Improper passing 3
Unsafe lane change 3
Failure to yield right of way 3
Disobeying a traffic device 2
Failure to signal 2
Child safety seat violation 3
Railroad crossing violation 5

NYS Driver Assessment Fees

If you accumulate 6 or more points within 18 months (measured by date of violation), the DMV will bill you a Driver Assessment fee — separate from and in addition to any court-imposed fines:

Points (within 18 months) Total Assessment (paid over 3 years)
6 $300
7 $375
8 $450
9 $525
10 $600
11+ $675+ (plus automatic license suspension)

Three speeding convictions within 18 months = 6-month license revocation — regardless of total points. This catches many drivers off guard.

These penalties add up fast. A single 21-mph-over speeding conviction means 6 points, up to $300 in fines, $93 in surcharges, $300 in Driver Assessment fees, and a potential insurance increase of 20% – 40% for three years. The total cost of a guilty plea can easily exceed $3,000. Fighting the ticket is almost always the better option.

Why You Should Hire a Lawyer Now — Not Later

There is a window of opportunity on most traffic tickets that closes fast. Under New York law (CPL § 100.25), you have the right to demand a supporting deposition from the officer who issued your ticket — a sworn statement describing exactly what happened. If the demand is made properly and the prosecution fails to provide it within 30 days, the ticket must be dismissed outright. No trial, no plea, no points — dismissed.

But the demand must be made early. The clock starts running from the return date on the bottom of your ticket. If you wait until the last minute to hire a lawyer — or worse, show up to court on your own and try to handle it yourself — that window may have already closed. Once it is gone, you lose a potential basis for a full dismissal that cannot be recovered.

This is not the only time-sensitive opportunity. Depending on the type of ticket, we may also demand radar or lidar calibration records, officer training certifications, speed measurement device maintenance logs, and other documentation that the prosecution is required to produce. Gaps or failures in these records give us additional grounds to challenge the ticket or move for dismissal.

The earlier you call, the more options we have. Don’t wait for your court date.
