What That Ticket Can Really Cost You
The fine on the ticket is the smallest part of the problem. Here is what most drivers do not think about until it is too late:
Points on your license. New York assigns points for most moving violations. A single speeding ticket can carry 3 to 11 points. Accumulate 11 points in 18 months and your license is automatically suspended.
DMV Driver Assessment fees. Six or more points triggers a separate bill from the DMV — $300 to $675+, payable over three years — on top of your court fines and surcharges.
Insurance increases. Your insurer sees the conviction, not the fine. A single speeding ticket can raise your premiums 20% to 40% for three years. Two tickets can double that impact. The average cost of a single speeding conviction in increased premiums alone is over $1,500.
License suspension. Enough points, enough tickets, or the wrong kind of violation can suspend your license — and with it, your ability to get to work, pick up your kids, and live your life. Three speeding convictions within 18 months triggers an automatic 6-month revocation regardless of total points.
CDL and commercial driver consequences. If you hold a CDL, a single serious traffic violation can trigger a 60-day disqualification. Two within 3 years means 120 days. A DWI — even in your personal car — means a one-year CDL disqualification. A second major offense means lifetime disqualification. Your career is on the line. Read more about CDL consequences.
Out-of-state complications. If you are licensed in another state, a New York conviction can follow you home through the Driver License Compact. Most states will add the conviction to your home-state record.
The real math: A single 21-mph-over speeding conviction means 6 points, up to $300 in fines, $93 in surcharges, $300 in Driver Assessment fees, and a potential insurance increase of $1,500+ over three years. The total cost of pleading guilty can easily exceed $2,000 — and that is for one ticket. Our flat fee to fight it is a fraction of that.
Why You Should Hire a Lawyer Now — Not Later
There is a window of opportunity on most traffic tickets that closes fast. Under New York law (CPL § 100.25), you have the right to demand a supporting deposition from the officer who issued your ticket — a sworn statement describing exactly what happened. If the demand is made properly and the prosecution fails to provide it within 30 days, the ticket must be dismissed outright. No trial, no plea, no points — dismissed.
But the demand must be made early. The clock starts running from the return date on the bottom of your ticket. If you wait until the last minute to hire a lawyer — or worse, show up to court on your own — that window may have already closed. Once it is gone, you lose a potential basis for a full dismissal that cannot be recovered.
Depending on the type of ticket, we may also demand radar or lidar calibration records, officer training certifications, speed measurement device maintenance logs, and other documentation that the prosecution is required to produce. Gaps or failures in these records give us additional grounds to challenge the ticket or move for dismissal.
The earlier you call, the more options we have.
How We Fight Your Ticket
Step 1: Send us the ticket. Text a photo to (631) 678-8993 or call (888) 275-2620. You will get a flat-fee quote — no surprises, no hourly billing.
Step 2: We assess the real risk. We look at the charge, the points, your driving history, DMV exposure, insurance implications, and any prior tickets that could compound the problem.
Step 3: We build a strategy. Depending on the situation, that may mean negotiating with the prosecutor for a reduction to a non-moving violation with zero points, challenging the ticket on procedural grounds, or contesting it at trial.
Step 4: We go to court — you don’t. In most courts across New York, we appear on your behalf so you never have to take a day off work, travel to the courthouse, or sit in a waiting room. You stay home. We handle it.
Step 5: We report the result. You get a clear explanation of the outcome, what it means for your record, and any next steps.
Tickets We Handle
We represent drivers charged with every type of traffic violation under the New York Vehicle and Traffic Law, including:
Speeding (VTL § 1180) — 3 to 11 points depending on speed over the limit. The most common ticket in New York.
Cell phone / texting (VTL § 1225-c / § 1225-d) — 5 points. More than most speeding tickets. Two within 18 months puts you at 10 points.
Red light (VTL § 1111) — 3 points. Do not confuse a police-issued red light ticket with a red light camera ticket. Camera tickets carry no points.
Stop sign (VTL § 1172) — 3 points.
Disobeying a traffic device (VTL § 1110-a) — 2 points.
Following too closely (VTL § 1129) — 4 points.
Unsafe lane change (VTL § 1128) — 3 points.
Failure to yield (VTL § 1140-1146) — 3 points.
Failure to stop for school bus (VTL § 1174) — 5 points.
Move Over Law (VTL § 1144-a) — 3 points.

New York Traffic Ticket Points & Fines
Every moving violation conviction in New York adds points to your driving record. Accumulate 6 points within 18 months and the DMV imposes a Driver Assessment fee on top of any court fines. Reach 11 points and your license is automatically suspended.
Speeding Tickets
| MPH Over Limit | Points | Fine Range (1st Offense) | Fine Range (2nd in 18 Mo.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 – 10 | 3 | $90 – $150 | $180 – $300 |
| 11 – 20 | 4 | $90 – $300 | $180 – $450 |

| 41+ | 11 | $90 – $300 | $180 – $450 |
All speeding fines are subject to a mandatory NYS surcharge of $88 – $93. School zone speeding carries higher fines: $180 – $600 for a first offense and $360 – $750 for a second offense within 18 months.

NYS Driver Assessment Fees
If you accumulate 6 or more points within 18 months (measured by date of violation), the DMV will bill you a Driver Assessment fee — separate from and in addition to any court-imposed fines:
| Points (within 18 months) | Total Assessment (paid over 3 years) |
|---|---|
| 6 | $300 |
| 7 | $375 |
| 8 | $450 |
| 9 | $525 |
| 10 | $600 |
| 11+ | $675+ (plus automatic license suspension) |
Three speeding convictions within 18 months = 6-month license revocation — regardless of total points. This catches many drivers off guard.
