Why This Ticket Matters More Than You Think

Most Canadian drivers who get a ticket in New York assume they can just pay the fine and move on. That is the most expensive mistake you can make. New York has reciprocal agreements with both Ontario and Quebec that share traffic conviction information across the border. A New York conviction does not stay in New York — it follows you home.

Ontario Drivers

Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation receives conviction data from New York. A New York traffic conviction can add demerit points to your Ontario driving record. Ontario uses a graduated penalty system: at 9 points you receive a warning letter, at 15 points your license is suspended. A single New York speeding conviction can add 3 to 6 demerit points to your Ontario record depending on the speed. Two tickets on one trip can put you halfway to a suspension.

Insurance consequences are equally serious. Ontario insurers review your driving record at renewal. A New York conviction will appear on your abstract, and your premiums can increase significantly — potentially for three years or more.

Quebec Drivers

The Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) has a reciprocal agreement with New York. Offenses committed in New York can add demerit points to your Quebec driving record. Quebec allows a maximum of 15 demerit points before license suspension (less for newer drivers). A single speeding conviction in New York can add 2 to 6 points to your Quebec record.

Quebec drivers face an additional risk: the SAAQ can impose contribution increases (the Quebec equivalent of insurance surcharges) based on demerit points accumulated from out-of-province convictions, including New York.

What Happens If You Just Pay the Ticket

Paying a New York traffic ticket is a guilty plea. There is no way to undo it once paid. The conviction is reported to your home province through the reciprocal agreement. Here is what a guilty plea triggers:

Points on your Canadian record. Ontario and Quebec both add demerit points based on the New York conviction. The point values may differ from New York’s own point system but the conviction itself is what gets reported.

Insurance increases. Canadian insurers see the New York conviction on your driving abstract. Premium increases of 20% to 40% per conviction are common, lasting three or more years.

Suspension of your New York driving privileges. If you accumulate 11 or more points under the New York point system within 18 months, New York will suspend your privilege to drive in the state. Your Canadian license remains valid in Canada, but you will not be legally permitted to drive in New York — and that suspension is visible to Ontario and Quebec through the reciprocal agreement.

DMV Driver Assessment fees. If your New York conviction results in 6 or more points within 18 months, the New York DMV will bill you a separate Driver Assessment fee of $300 to $675+, payable over three years. This is a separate charge on top of any court fines. The DMV will pursue collection even for out-of-country drivers.

How We Fight Your Ticket

Step 1: Send us the ticket. Text a photo to (631) 678-8993 or call (888) 275-2620. Tell us you have a Canadian license. You will get a flat-fee quote immediately.

Step 2: We assess the real risk. We look at the charge, the points under both the New York system and your home province’s system, your driving history, and any prior New York tickets that could compound the problem.

Step 3: We build a strategy. Depending on the situation, we negotiate with the prosecutor for a reduction to a non-moving violation with zero points, challenge the ticket on procedural grounds, or contest it at trial. The goal is always the same: keep the conviction off your Canadian record.

Step 4: We go to court — you stay home. We appear on your behalf in the New York court. You do not need to cross the border, take time off work, or travel back to the courthouse. We handle it entirely.

Step 5: We report the result. You get a clear explanation of the outcome, what it means for your Canadian driving record, and any next steps.

Act Now — There Is a Deadline That Can Help You

Under New York law (CPL § 100.25), you have the right to demand a supporting deposition from the officer who issued your ticket — a sworn statement describing exactly what happened. If the demand is made properly and the prosecution fails to provide it within 30 days, the ticket can be dismissed outright. But the demand must be made early. The clock starts from the return date on the bottom of your ticket. The earlier you call, the more options we have.

Which Courts Do We Cover?

We handle tickets for Canadian drivers in every court in New York State — all 62 counties. Whether you were ticketed on the Thruway, I-87, I-81, the QEW extension routes, or a village road you were just passing through, we can represent you in that court without you needing to return. Find your county.

Common corridors where we represent Canadian drivers: I-87 (Adirondack Northway) from the Champlain border crossing through Clinton, Essex, Warren, Saratoga, and Albany counties; I-81 from the Thousand Islands bridge through Jefferson, Oswego, Onondaga, Cortland, and Broome counties; the Lewiston-Queenston and Peace Bridge crossings into Niagara and Erie counties; and the New York State Thruway (I-90) across the state.

Do Not Wait Until It Is Too Late

The sooner you act, the more options we have. Waiting until the last minute limits what any attorney can do and can result in a default conviction if you miss a deadline. A default conviction in New York carries the same points, fines, and cross-border reporting consequences as a guilty plea — but with no opportunity to negotiate.
